A landmark of silent horror cinema, The Phantom of the Opera stars Lon Chaney as the mysterious figure who lurks beneath the Paris Opera House. Obsessed with a young soprano, he uses manipulation and terror to shape her destiny while remaining hidden from the world. Renowned for Chaney’s transformative performance and groundbreaking makeup effects, this silent classic helped define the horror genre and continues to captivate audiences more than a century later. The film was released in 1925 and the runtime is 93 minutes.
Part of the Carolina Theatre’s 2026–27 Silent Film Series, featuring live organ accompaniment by Mark Andersen on the original 1927 Robert Morton Theatre Pipe Organ. Installed when the theatre opened, the Robert Morton accompanied silent films during the Carolina’s earliest years and remains one of the few theatre organs still in its original home.
