Social isolation affects many older adults, especially those in the LGBTQIA2+ community. It can lead to loneliness, depression, and poor health. I believe we can change this. By focusing on education, advocacy, and positive social engagement, we build a stronger, more connected community in Central North Carolina. Together, we create spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
Social isolation affects many older adults, especially within the LGBTQIA2+ community. Studies show that 1 in 2 older LGBTQIA2+ adults report feeling isolated, left out, or lacking companionship. These experiences can lead to loneliness, depression, and declining physical health.
At Carolina Aging Alliance, we believe this reality can change. Through education, advocacy, and meaningful social engagement, we are building a stronger, more connected community across Central North Carolina—one where every person feels seen, heard, and valued.
How We Combat and are Reducing Social Isolation
Social isolation is a serious challenge, but it is not unbeatable. We address it by creating welcoming opportunities for connection through:
Social events
Support groups
Educational workshops
Community outings
These programs are designed around the unique experiences of older LGBTQIA2+ adults. When people come together, they share stories, build friendships, and find support.
Weekly meetups at local community centers provide safe and affirming spaces to relax and connect. Activities include:
Book clubs
Art classes
Discussion groups
We also organize outings to parks, museums, and theaters so participants can enjoy social interaction in fun and relaxed settings.

Education as a Tool for Connection
Education empowers individuals and strengthens community bonds. Our workshops focus on:
Mental health and wellness
Legal rights
Healthcare navigation
Aging with dignity
These sessions provide important information while creating space for shared experiences and open conversation.
For example, a workshop on healthcare rights helps participants navigate complex systems with confidence. Learning together builds trust and encourages ongoing engagement. We also provide training for caregivers and service providers so they can better support LGBTQIA2+ older adults with understanding and respect.
Advocacy That Makes a Difference
Advocacy creates lasting change. We work to ensure policies and services reflect the real needs of LGBTQIA2+ older adults in Central North Carolina, including:
Inclusive healthcare
Safe and affirming housing
Accessible social services
By partnering with local organizations and raising awareness, we amplify community voices. We encourage members to participate in advocacy efforts by attending town halls, sharing their stories, and supporting initiatives that promote equality and dignity.
Creating Positive Social Engagement
Positive social engagement is at the heart of our mission. Our programs encourage creativity, movement, and purpose while building friendships and reducing isolation.
Examples include:
Intergenerational Connections: Sharing stories and experiences across generations is a powerful way to engage with others and feel part of something greater than oneself.
Fitness & Wellness Classes: Gentle yoga, walking groups, or dance groups that promote health and social interaction.
Volunteer OpportunitiesHelping others builds purpose and strengthens community ties.
Every activity is welcoming, inclusive, and affirming so participants feel comfortable and valued.

Taking Action Together
Reducing social isolation requires all of us. You can make a difference by:
Attending events
Joining support groups
Volunteering
Sharing your experiences
Encouraging others to connect
Together, we can create a vibrant, caring community where everyone thrives.
By engaging, educating, and advocating, we are building a future where no one feels alone. Let’s connect, support, and uplift one another—every day.
