Programs & Initiatives

Our Mission and Vision provide direction and focus on three key areas.

Advocacy

Carolina Aging Alliance is represented on the board of Resources for Seniors, North Carolina Coalition on Aging, and on the Governor’s Commission on Aging, among others. Members are active participants in senior services organizations, so LGBTQ+ voices are included when decisions about services to aging persons are discussed and implemented.

Education

Carolina Aging Alliance has developed training programs to support leaders and staff of senior services organizations to be more sensitive and effective when dealing with LGBTQ+ residents, clients, families, and caregivers. We also provide education to our members on topics such as healthy living, navigating senior services, and more.

Social Interaction

Carolina Aging Alliance promotes social interaction and reducing social isolation among members as a key priority. Many social programs, responding to the varied interests of our members, are scheduled on a regular basis. We host five major events each year along with a number of events that take place weekly or monthly.

Volunteers

To accomplish its Mission and fulfill its Vision, there is much work to be done, and Carolina Aging Alliance counts on the support of dedicated individuals who will share their special skills, volunteer to help with the many tasks and planned activities/events, provide constructive feedback and suggestions, donate financially to the organization, or just participate in the many planned activities and events.

Individuals and groups are invited and encouraged to submit plans for hosting Meet-up activities and events that promote social interaction, healthy living, and general improved quality of life for older LGBTQ+ adults in Central North Carolina. Submitted applications (Meetup Event/Activity Application) are reviewed by our “Events/Activity Team Coordinators” to determine if the event/activity is appropriate as a Carolina Aging Alliance endorsed meetup event/activity.

Being a volunteer is a great way to get involved in the LGBTQ+ communities, meet other like-minded individuals, and make new friends. Step forward today by contacting service@carolinaaging.org to “Pay It Forward” or “Pay It Back” by sharing special skills you can provide or to express your willingness to lend a hand wherever needed.

Senior Housing Initiative

One of our more ambitious objectives has been the Senior Housing Initiative. Its goal is to advocate for an affordable, safe, respectful, and welcoming place for LGBTQ+ seniors to live in their golden years.
