Aging brings changes and challenges for everyone, but for LGBTQIA2+ older adults, the experience can be especially complex. Many grew up in a time when being open about their identity was unsafe, leading to lifelong patterns of privacy and self-protection. As they age, these factors—combined with loss of community, family rejection, or health issues—can increase the risk of loneliness and social isolation.
Social isolation in older adults is more than a feeling—it’s a public health concern. Research shows that chronic loneliness can increase the risk of depression, cognitive decline, and even early mortality. For LGBTQ seniors, these risks are amplified by social and structural barriers that make connection more difficult.

Why LGBTQIA2+ Older Adults Are at Higher Risk
Several factors make LGBTQ seniors and loneliness a critical concern:
Loss of chosen family: Many LGBTQIA2+ elders have built strong networks of friends who serve as family. As peers pass away or move into care facilities, those networks can shrink.
Limited access to affirming care: Some seniors avoid medical or social services out of fear of discrimination.
Housing insecurity: Many LGBTQIA2+ elders live alone or in housing that is not affirming, which can deepen isolation.
Generational trauma: Older adults who came of age during times of criminalization or stigma may struggle to trust institutions, even those that now welcome them.
Understanding these unique challenges helps organizations like Carolina Aging Alliance create targeted, inclusive solutions.
Carolina Aging Alliance: Building Community and Connection
At Carolina Aging Alliance, we believe that every older adult deserves to age with dignity, community, and pride. Our programs are designed to combat social isolation in LGBTQIA2+ seniors through connection, advocacy, and engagement.
Our key programs include:
Social Engagement: Being involved in a larger community and participating in activities is essential for healthy aging. Fostering positive connections can significantly reduce social isolation, which is a key factor in leading a fulfilling life and feeling connected to your community. Carolina Aging Alliance offers monthly in-person and virtual gatherings that offer support, education, and celebration for LGBTQIA2+ older adults across North Carolina.
Education: To effectively connect with older LGBTQ+ adults, it is essential to cultivate both knowledge and empathy. Carolina Aging Alliance has created training programs aimed at helping senior services organizations become more effective in their interactions with LGBTQ+ residents, clients, families, and caregivers. Additionally, we offer educational resources to our members on various topics, including healthy living, navigating senior services, and much more.
Advocacy: Remaining actively engaged and ensuring our voices are heard is vital as we age. We empower older LGBTQ+ adults to be authentic and age with dignity by engaging senior services organizations, ensuring that LGBTQ+ voices are considered during discussions and implementation of services for older adults..
These initiatives provide more than companionship—they create belonging. Through shared stories, laughter, and mutual support, participants rediscover the joy of connection.
